The idea of Theme Night is so exciting to not only the guests, but also the employees. The theme always includes fun costumes, delicious desserts at dinner, and best of all - the new family-friendly show. I enjoy the anticipation of walking through the greeting line admiring every staff member in their festive attire; which family member has the flashy costume; what the “horse” in the parade looks like this year or until I find out what Randy is wearing – or more accurately what Randy is NOT wearing. There’s nothing better than the fun atmosphere and excitement I feel in this Pocono family resort!

Dinner and a show at Woodloch is that time when the girls bring out their best dress, men put themselves together with a collared shirt and some nice shoes and the dining room looks like a party for 600. My personal favorite thing about Theme Night is the dinner part of “dinner and a show in the Poconos”. You’ve got a 4 course meal - appetizer, salad, entrée (prime rib, salmon, chicken) and as I said before, the new dessert! - hopefully something chocolaty (fingers crossed). Following dinner is my next favorite part - everyone rushes to the nightclub to find the perfect table for their family and friends to get the best view of the stage, luckily, anywhere in the nightclub is great seating! As everyone gathers, music is being played by The Company to entertain us as we wait for the show to begin.

This year the theme is The Majesty of the British Empire. Now take it from me - I had no idea what that meant going into the show! I was excited because not only is it a new theme - but it’s something I’m not familiar with. To my surprise I was surrounded by some familiar sounds of James Bond, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Ozzy Osbourne, The Beatles and even the Spice Girls - That’s right the SPICE GIRLS! Not only were the dinner costumes entertaining but the theme show offered costumes recognizable to all ages-including Harry Potter and Queen Elizabeth. I also really enjoyed the unique British humor and the different charm it has compared to American comedy.

Needless to say, the Theme Show at Woodloch Resort has yet to disappoint. Even with my lack of knowledge in the material - I found myself laughing and dancing around to the sounds (and humor) of THE BRITISH EMPIRE! Our own Woodloch talent and our Broadway loaners set out to create yet another pleasurable experience, different and entertaining, for adults and children alike – wow, they really nailed it, again!

Woodloch’s Kids Splash Zone = Unending Giggles

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> I could go on and on about what Woodloch does for their staff, but that would take all day. On Sunday nights in the off-season, staff are welcome to enjoy the facilities, specifically the pool and sports complex. So that’s what I did last night, went to the pool!

I have a ten month old daughter named Savannah, who just started walking, and on a recent vacation we found out she just loves - I mean LOVES – the water. Bath, pool, lake, ocean, whatever – as soon as you take her out of the water she cries, she could live in an inner tube in the middle of Lake Wallenpaupack and be perfectly happy. So my wife and I decided to take our little one to the pool because Woodloch has their new Kids Splash Zone!

The Splash Zone is designed for kids 12 and under, but really it’s more suited for little kids. Perfect! We all got changed easily and stepped through the double glass doors into the pool area. First thing I thought was – how comfortable the 82° felt as we escaped the -2° wind chill outside, but the pool waters felt even better! We started off nice and easy in the kids wadding pool, it was about 9” deep all around the circular shape. The ledge around the pool was perfect for sitting and watching the wee ones scamper around. Ok, good warm-up we thought, lets enter the WOODLOCH SPLASH ZONE!

The place is really impressive; the super tall (25’) walls are decorated with a beautiful perspective mural of the creatures of the forest, pine trees and rolling hills – very appropriate for the area and really cute and fun for the kids. My daughter fell in love with the mamma and baby bears. There are a bunch of little water slides, jets, waterfalls, fountains and even a few water guns. There’s a little rubber rowboat with whirlpool jets in the seats which was a blast. The water is about 9” deep or less all around. All the water toys are made out of a rubber or foam material for safety.

My little girl found the toy that was just the right size for her; it’s a little otter, sitting on a log and you can slide from his head down to his long fat tail. He can’t be more than 2’ at most and there’s a little water jet to make it slick. Savannah was just full of deep belly giggles as she slid down the otter’s tail. I had to hold her of course, but as soon as we reached the bottom she jumped over and started to crawl back up. So we’d slide down again and again with her laughter filling this room.

We all had such a great experience in Woodloch’s Splash Zone, it really entertained my little baby girl. She used so much energy and had so much fun (as did we) she was fast asleep before we got back home (6 minutes away…).

Marianne Williamson Inspires Local Audience at Woodloch Resort

Inspirational speaker and four-time NY Times best-selling author Marianne Williamson held her first public speaking event promoting her new book, A Course In Weight Loss-21 Spiritual Lessons For Surrendering Your Weight Forever, last Saturday, Nov. 6th at Woodloch Pines Resort.

That’s right- Held at Woodloch Pines in Hawley, Pennsylvania!

As I arrived to work on that cool fall afternoon, I observed a sign that read “PARKING FOR MARIANNE WILLIAMSON EVENT”.

I had never heard of Marianne Williamson.

After parking in the lot reserved for Woodloch Staff members, I headed towards the Heritage Club to begin my work shift.

As I entered the theatre, to my surprise, there were nearly 400 people seated, listening intently to what this woman was saying. I asked the person nearest to me, “who is this?”

I was informed that Marianne had been a popular guest on Oprah, Larry King, Charlie Rose, and Good Morning America. How did I not know who this person was?

As I stood there for a few minutes listening to her talk, I noticed how captivated the audience appeared. Mostly middle aged women, but men scattered throughout, it was as if they were hanging on to here every word. They looked inspired and moved.

Shortly after I had arrived, she concluded after speaking for nearly 2 hours. She then fielded questions from several women who were visibly filled with emotion from her words of encouragement and hope.

My immediate reaction was that I had just missed something spectacular. This room was filled with men and women, who, I assume the majority of which, were struggling with some type of food addiction; not only compulsive eaters, but anyone who views food as their enemy. And my assumption was that those that weren’t battling a food addiction were struggling with some other type of addiction.

I think we all know someone we love that battles the demons of addiction on a daily basis. The lack of self-worth, self –confidence, and self-respect that we addicts possess, can leave us in a state of extreme loneliness and isolation, and we sometimes feel as though there is no way out. So we turn to that thing that does not judge us; that which is always there for us. Whether it be food, alcohol, a drug, or any other object of addiction.

Marianne reminded the people in that room on Saturday, that though our biggest fear is inadequacy, that there is a way out and there truly is hope. Conquering any of our addictions is a spiritual quest and a life-long process. It takes hard work and discipline. She also encouraged us that our best days are ahead of us, and we can learn to love ourselves again.

Though I did not know of Marianne Williamson before last week, I was inspired to purchase her book and say “hello” to her afterwards. I have since learned that she is actively campaigning supporting legislation to establish a U.S Dept. of Peace. She also founded Project Angel Food in 1989 which serves food daily in the Los Angeles area to thousands of home bound people with aids. Marianne is a true humanitarian and an inspiration to many. font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Woodloch is a place where my family retreats to spend quality time together. Our Woodloch trips are synonymous with good times and relaxation. We have shared so much laughter together and made so many great memories over the past 13 years of traveling up to Woodloch, so it is hard to pick just one memory to write about.

I usually travel up to Woodloch with my boyfriend and my parents. For years, I had constantly raved about how wonderful this resort is and how much fun I have when I go up there. My friends would always say, “Wow, that sounds like fun!” but I never felt like they truly understood what Woodloch is all about. In November of 2009, my good friend Samantha was able to take the trip up to Hawley with us to experience Woodloch. She was really anticipating the trip; we were both having very rough semesters at school and were in dire need of some fun.

Samantha fell in love with Woodloch the moment we arrived. She remarked about how beautiful the whole resort was and about how many activities were scheduled. My boyfriend Adam and I kept saying, “We gotta go on the haunted hayride!” We had been on the haunted hayride a few years back and had so much fun. Samantha was excited about the hayride. “I love scary stuff!” she said. Eric, one of the bartenders, was kind enough to call and make a 7:30 hayride reservation for my family.

After much anticipation, 7:30 finally arrived. When we arrived at the main lodge, my mother said, “I’m going to get a cup of coffee and relax in the lobby.” Samantha was confused. “Mrs. Elliott, why aren’t you coming on the hayride?” she asked. My mother explained that she doesn’t like scary rides and that she would prefer to relax in the warmth of the lobby.

Samantha, Adam, my father and I waited by the nightclub along with the rest of the hay riders. When our group was finally called, we hopped onto the bus and started the journey to the hayride. Samantha kept saying, “Oh my gosh, I’m really scared.” I said, “Are you kidding me? It’s a lot of fun. Just keep in mind that this whole thing is done by the Woodloch staff. They are not going to hurt you.” We finally arrived at the beginning of the hayride and sat in the truck. After a friendly “Boo!” and safety talk from Joey, we were on our way. Samantha said, “This doesn’t seem so bad.” Well…she spoke too soon.

As soon as we got into the thick of the woods, someone jumped out of the bushes and Samantha screamed at the top of her lungs. She threw herself into the middle of the truck and kept screaming. Of course, this only egged on the people who were working the hayride. I grabbed Samantha and pulled her back up onto her seat. Adam, my father and I were laughing hysterically. It was so funny to see a 21-year-old girl ridiculously scared, while there were older children on the ride who were laughing and enjoying themselves. Needless to say, she was scared out of her mind for the rest of the ride. Every time someone even moved, Samantha would scream. About halfway through, she said, “Mr. Elliott, can I hold your hand? I can’t take this anymore!” She held my father’s hand for the duration of the ride. My father, Adam and I laughed the entire time. Of course, we had a nice story to tell my mother when we got back to the lodge. My mother defended Samantha, saying, “Well, at least she went! It’s okay Samantha, I would’ve been crying if I were you.” My father, Adam and I just laughed at her for the rest of the night.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; There is something to be said for an area that experiences the four seasons so intensely. When you change from our winter wonderland to the buds of spring our area seems to be reborn with the season. People begin to emerge from the warmth of their homes and join in on community events and outdoor activities. Lake Wallenpaupack is beginning to fill up with fishermen to soon be followed by the watersport enthusiasts. One of my favorite spring activities is to explore the nature hikes available at the various lakes and parks. Promised Land State Park has some great trails to explore on foot or bike, just watch out for the mayflies this time of year.

I also enjoy being able to walk leisurely through downtown Hawley, exploring the shops and taking time to visit with friends while walking in the park. One of my favorite places to eat breakfast in Hawley is the Hawley Diner which offers good food and a staff that always has a warm greeting or a friendly word for me. They also make killer French toast! On the other hand, if you’re looking for fine dining you definitely don’t want to miss the Settlers Inn, who’s seasonal menu is always delicious and innovative. The last time I ate there I had their foie gras which was delectable. A little further outside town Woodloch Springs and Pines offers several eating establishments for a variety of tastes. My personal favorite is the Grill Room at Woodloch Springs. The attire is casual but the food is remarkable. I recommend their Bavarian Pretzel sandwich: pastrami, Swiss, spicy mustard and a pretzel roll that is a salty sensation. My dad loves their golf course which is beautiful in the spring with all of the trees budding along the greens.

While you’re at Woodloch you should check out their theme show which takes place Wednesday and Saturday nights. I always enjoy their yearly themes which include dancing, singing and Saturdays they are followed by a comedian. Last year I took my parents and my mom couldn’t stop singing along with the musical acts.

If you’re looking for things to do at night in our area Bingham Park shows movies outdoors and the Boathouse Restaurant offers live music Friday or Saturday night. I’ve spent many a night hanging with friends at the bar and having appetizers on their patio which looks out onto Lake Wallenpaupack.

I also love the spring because my birthday kicks off the season. This year my husband treated me to a massage at the Lodge at Woodloch. I was surprised to find out they also do hair appointments in addition to their lavish spa treatments. I didn’t have to stay there to participate in their treatments and I got to use the amenities of the spa for an hour before and after my treatment. Luckily my Native Stone Massage was reasonably priced because I will be going back again soon.

As any local will tell you spring is a beautiful time of year here in Northeast PA. With so much to do inside and outside the only question I have is: what should I do next?

"CHOOSING THE RIGHT JOB FOR ME" by: Sue Nordenhold

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_irvBn_VF4BM/S4lVae2R2AI/AAAAAAAAAFU/8xLdz9ihxoQ/s200/Sue2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442975538099640322" />
When I was asked to write about Working at Woodloch, I was honored. So many thoughts and questions came to mind. As a young teen, all of about fifteen years old, I knew that it was time to look for a job. I knew that down the line, I would want to purchase a car, go to college, and of course, buy some clothes, shoes, etc on my own. My Mom and Dad suggested that I look into Woodloch. We had been guests many times, enjoying Smorgasbord, and Sunday afternoon dinners with our family. There was something about Woodloch Pines that captured my interest, so I decided it was time to compose a letter, addressed to John Kiesendahl, applying to work at a Waitress in the dining room. A short time later, I received a letter in response, asking me to come for an interview, with John. I was excited to receive the letter, and yet somewhat apprehensive, not knowing what to expect. Would they hire me?? I was uncertain. My objective was to work weekends, and maybe a night or two during the week when I was able to. I was involved with sports all year long, and just hoped that it would all work out. When I came in for my interview, I was nervous, hoping to make a good impression. That was extremely important to me. The interview went well, and shortly after, I was hired, my first day being December 24th, 1974. And that is where it all began!!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 144px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_irvBn_VF4BM/S3WCfQ3MPpI/AAAAAAAAAFE/FFrh6JwfZgs/s200/old+staff+dining.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437395598733754002" />
I arrived that very morning, feeling a little apprehensive and excited all at the same. From the very first day, I was welcomed with open arms; The Kiesendahl and Kranich families, fellow staff members in all departments, and the guests. As the day went on, I was more at ease. We had been told from the very first day that our guests were to be treated with the utmost respect, treating them as if they were guests in our own home, Hospitality to the highest degree. Treating our guests how we would expect to be treated. That would be our objective. First and foremost, hospitality would be addressed by greeting our guests as they enter the Dining Room with a warm, heartfelt greeting and of course, with a smile!! Back then, our uniforms were Salmon pink and white uniforms with clinical white shoes highly polished no earrings bigger than a quarter and a neat appearance. Hair over the shoulder was to be tied back. That was the way it was to be, and rightly so! During this time, Uncle Harry and Uncle Don shared the responsibilities of the entire operation with the assistance of John (JK) who operated the dining room, with his assistant, Fred Gelderman, and Russ Kranich who ran the kitchen. Aunt Mary ran the front desk, and was always there to greet our guests as they would come into the dining room. Aunt Marge was in charge of housekeeping. Back in the day, no one was dismissed from the dining room until John or Fred would check the Pantry, the tables, the overall dining room to have it meet their expectations. This was the correct way, and overall, it taught us the highest level of responsibility, respect and dedication.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 160px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_irvBn_VF4BM/S3WCpyK4n9I/AAAAAAAAAFM/07f_1_qbe3M/s200/WLP+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437395779473416146" />
Here is a little history of Woodloch at that time. The resort was much smaller. The North Lodge was the Nightclub. There were no accommodations in Springbrook (no indoor pool or sports complex), Mt. Laurel, Country Store, Lake Estates, Southwoods homes, Inn, Country Store, or Boathouse. Woodloch Springs too was a dream for the future as well. What we did have was Family Cottages, Tallwood units, Rockledge Units, Split Rock, and Southwoods. Our housekeepers were picked up for work and brought home by Woodloch Vans driven by none other than our own Dennis Neenan and company!! The now Cottage Unit was our Bike Shop, The Bumper Car building, Forest, Keystone Room and Gymnasium were too, buildings of the future, at that time, it was the North Lodge Parking Lot.

The kitchen was a combination of pantry area, bakery and kitchen. There were signs on the wall posting the price of dishware, so staff was aware of the cost when something had been broken. If you are walking down to our Heritage Night Club, you will see some wonderful pictures of these times.

Our wait staff meetings were held on the Stairwell which now houses the Staircase Lounge. This was at one time, the original dining room. Our meetings are much like they are today; going over the menu, special diet information, celebrations such as Anniversaries, and Birthdays, then of course, any other important information was shared at that time.

At this point in my life, I was to begin my college life. I then was apprehensive, as I had gotten to know so many great friends within the staff. I knew that I had to move on, but I was not sure if I was ready. While I was in college, I was always thinking about my friends back at Woodloch, and could not wait to return to work for the summer months. I was so glad to return for my summer, as I knew of guests that I have gotten to know, and was looking forward to their return. That is the way it was and is at Woodloch Pines. When I returned after my second year, I had learned that a childhood friend was now employed at Woodloch, working in the kitchen. To my surprise, Dave Nordenhold was employed there!! We had a wonderful summer together. This time, I chose not to return to school with mixed emotions. I knew in my heart, that I wanted to remain at Woodloch, and spend time with Dave. Woodloch had always had a hold of my heart, and I was glad to be here on a full time basis. We celebrated with our annual Labor Day Parties, Staff Football games, Christmas Parties in the North Lodge, and Benevolent Parties too. I could go on and on.

Now, I have just a little more history for you. When going up the stairs in the original dining room (now Staircase lounge) when turning towards the right (now Human Resources) that was the eating room, and then one directly across the hall was another eating room. Anthony's office was then a girl's staff room, Jeanne's desk, was a closet which included all of the stainless steel dishware for Smorgasbord, the hallway to the now Executive offices, was another girl’s staff room too. The Executive offices were then the roof.

Dave and I were married in June of 1980. Along with many other Woodloch couples, we have watched our families grow. Time sure does go by quickly!! Our families have grown, our children have experienced their lives in the Woodloch world, and we have had some guests also become part of the operation throughout the years. I have watched families who once came here as guests with their small children where the children now come with their children. It is truly a wonderful thing!!

Dave and I did leave for a few years, from 1986 to 1990, opening our own restaurant. Our sons, Matt and Bill were so young at that time. Thankfully my Mom and Dad were so helpful assisting us in their care. As the time went on, we enjoyed the business, yet we had no time with our children and we made the decision to close, and return back to Woodloch. We were so glad we did!! Not only for the fact that when you are in business for yourselves, it is 7 day/24 hour job, and was too much. Returning to Woodloch, we were back where we wanted to be, connecting with fellow staff members and our guests that we missed. Again, being in our own business, we appreciated what Woodloch's operation was all about even more. All of these years, learning what is most important in life, the hospitality industry, and assuring that our guests were treated in the best possible way, as if they were in our own home.

What is truly magnificent about working at Woodloch is the love and dedication for one another. We have had some wonderful celebrations, through Marriage, Children, Graduations, watching our families grow, Our Crisis Fund group, where we have had some wonderful shows, raising money to help people within our staff in need. We also share in our sadness too. We have had people lose their homes, cancer, other illness, separations and divorce, but in any case, either happy or sad; we are always there for one another. Being part of the Woodloch family is such a wonderful experience!!

Who would have known, when applying for my first job that I would be here as long as I have. I am so thankful, so grateful!!

I have watched Woodloch grow in so many ways. When it comes down to the main objective, we still clarify that our first and foremost is to assure our guests that they are satisfied with every part of their stay at Woodloch. It brings so much joy seeing our guests return and bring people each time they return. What I love most about Woodloch is the dedication, the friendships, joy and love that is shared through our families and guests. No matter what the situation is at hand, we are always there for one another. I have learned many things here at Woodloch, hospitality, responsibility, respect, objective, what is truly most important in life then and today. The BSA
provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the
responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.

For nearly a century, the BSA has helped build the future leaders of this
country by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes — and, through nearly a century of
experience, knows — that helping youth is a key to building a more
conscientious, responsible, and productive society.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_irvBn_VF4BM/S3AfzmY0T1I/AAAAAAAAAE8/88RCL8Kt_XA/s200/_DSC0229CMYK.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435879721574616914" />BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA HISTORY WITH LAKE TEEDYUSKUNG

The first native settlers were the Lenni Lenape Indians who lived in the lake area in the early 17th century. Around 1617 the Lenapes became subject to the more powerful Iroquois people. A complete description of the Indian occupation of the lake area is better left to native American experts. Read an excellent history of the Delaware Indian Nations by Lee Sultzman. Teedyuskung is listed among the Pennsylvania Villages. Look for the book 'King of the Delaware’s: Teedyuskung 1700-1763', by Anthony F. C.
Wallach. Late 1800 Property Owners. James Henry and Adelaine Thompson, the grandparents of Helen Lockwood and James A. Thompson (Helen's brother), purchased a large tract of land encompassing the southeast and southwest shorelines of the lake from Martha J. Quick in 1886. The East Shore tract of land ran from Beck's (Gichigumme) to Engvaldsen's (at the East Point). The West Shore shoreline was sold off as parcels during the Depression. Much of the land behind the West Shore cabins and cottages was owned by Joseph Kimble (now known as Bear Springs Hunting Club), Edward Chandler, and John D. Ross. Early Settler - James Henry Thompson. Helen told us that James and Adelaine built a frame house on the east side of the lake near where the Lockwood’s live now, and lived in it from 1887 to about 1900. They moved away for a few years and the house completely disappeared while they were gone! They then built a log cabin on the property, and slowly over the years sold off the rest of their holdings.

One of the Lake's most famous residents was Daniel Carter Beard, one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America (May, 1905). Woodsman, illustrator, and naturalist, Daniel Carter Beard was a pioneering sprit of the Boy Scouts of America. In 1882, he
illustrated Mark Twain's 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court'. Already 60 years old when the BSA was formed, Daniel Beard became a founder when he merged his 'The Sons of Daniel Boone' organization with the naturalist Ernest Seton's 'Woodcraft Indians' in 1910.

As first National Scout Commissioner, Beard helped design the original Scout uniform (hat, shirt, and neckerchief) and introduced elements of the first class scout badge. "Uncle Dan", as he was known to the boys and leaders will be remembered as a colorful figure dressed in buckskins who helped form scouting in America. Other BSA founders were Baden-Powell, William D. Boyce, and James West. Contrary to popular myth, Sir Robert Baden-Powell only started the 'Boy Scouts of England' based on Dan Beard's 'Sons of Daniel Boone'. "I am not", he said, "the father of the Boy-Scout movement. I might be called its uncle... I looked at what the United States was doing, read some of Beard's books on various plans that you had under way over here, cribbed from them, right and left, and started the 'Boy Scouts of England'!"

Dan owned 3 parcels on the lake. He acquired one piece from the George Rowland Estate in 1878. The second piece was owned by his brother, Harry Beard. The third piece of property was purchased by Mrs. Kellogg in 1888 from James Henry Thompson and sold to Dan Beard for his school in 1926. His house on the lake was called 'Wild Lands'. Beard's original Boy Scout Camp was owned by Ellsworth Peterson after he discontinued his scouting activity. The tilting boat house was a lake side landmark until the 1980's when it collapsed.

“A Tribute to the Matriarch of Woodloch”

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 157px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_irvBn_VF4BM/S1X9D7AZVuI/AAAAAAAAAEk/ln488yYDzYw/s200/Harry+%26+Mary+picnik1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5428523169685788386" />
Mary Elisabeth Kiesendahl, matriarch of Woodloch Pines Resort, passed away on January 9, 2010.

Although stricken with Alzheimer’s disease, she exuded love to those around her until her death; she may not have known your name but she continued to show her love. Mary was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., April 22, 1926, to her parents Stanley and Elisabeth Mould. She spent most of early life in Baldwin, N.Y., where she graduated from Baldwin High School in 1944 and met her husband Harry. Mary moved to Hawley, PA, with her husband and three children in 1958.

She and Harry founded Woodloch Pines Resort, where she worked alongside her family and the staff she considered family for over 40 years. Mary also dedicated much time volunteering on the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Board and was a member of the Woodloch Ladies Golf League. Aunt Mary, as she was known, welcomed everyone she met as if they were guests in her own home and welcomed many into her heart as her dear and beloved friends. We all love better for having been loved by Mary.

GROWING UP WOODLOCH by Patrick K

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_irvBn_VF4BM/SyuLnVxzv_I/AAAAAAAAADU/AD5zevtSmHQ/s320/Patrick6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416576484820369394" /> I've been fortunate enough to grow up in what I believe to be the greatest resort in the world. From the time I was 5, I was in the themed parades, and dancing on the stage. My parents brought me to work often so that I would get used to having a lot of people around (I was never a shy boy). Some of my fondest memories are swimming in Lake Teedyskung with my best friend Justin, my little sister, and the various guests that I would meet that day. We would play all day in the lake and eat ice cream sandwiches for lunch! The love that I felt from the guests and staff was and still is very real. I've grown up with many guests that still come here today! As I continued to grow throughout my teens, I would spend many nights in the North Lodge dancing to DJ Luis's music and creating memories that will last forever. One thing that parents have always stressed to me is work ethic. They had me start working at the age of 11 at the beach. To date I've worked in almost every department at Woodloch. Work was never a burden for me though, because I loved what I did, even shoveling snow (that's right, on school snow days I would have to go to work and shovel all day)! The friendships that I've formed, and the lessons that I've learned from growing up at Woodloch are invaluable, and I am thankful everyday of my life to have grown up at Woodloch.

Get To Know the Woodloch Staff

Frank Betz Jr.
Q.When is your Birthday
A. 9/19/1973

Q. Have had 2 hole-in-ones and several 290+ games in bowling (highest being 299)

Q. If you could be any TV character, who would you be and why?
A. Cozmo Kramer. Due to having the ability to sit back and laugh all day, being able to come up with great ideas such as a book about coffee tables that actually is a coffee table, adopting my own highway and of course creating Christmas cards with inappropriate pictures of my friends :)

Q. If you could change one thing about Woodloch what would it be?
A. Creating a more modern feel. Do you have a funny or interesting Woodloch story? Tell me about it…
A. Well, there was one time by the lake after some time spent in the Sports Bar that I went down the water slide and lost my glasses. My current position is Guest Relations Manager.

Q. If you could have lunch with one famous person (living or dead) who would it be and why?
A. One person I have always admired and would love to have lunch with was Katherine Hepburn. She was a strong and determined woman when it was not popular to be such, and I enjoyed her spirit both on and off the camera.

Q. Do you have any hidden talents?
A. I don't have any real hidden talents. What you see is what you get. Although I am a pretty good cook, I would say my greatest gift is "gab" and I use it in all aspects of my life.

Q. What is the best thing about living in the Pocono's?
A. Living in the Pocono's is beautiful, I love the seasons, most of the time you don't have to deal with traffic, and the "small town" feeling of knowing almost everyone is very appealing to me.

Q. Where is one place you would like to travel?
A. I am hoping to travel to Bermuda by cruise. I have been told over and over that it is the most beautiful island and I really want to visit there.

Q. What is your best Woodloch memory?
A. There is a story about Chuck Russell, a very “fun loving” guest who passed away due to cancer at a young age. In honor of his memory Woodloch instituted the “Chuck Russell Award”. It has been given out to “fun loving, enthusiastic” guests for the past 14 summers. One candidate per week is chosen to win this award. Each “winner” has their name on a permanent plaque outside the Heritage Club. When the award completed its 10th summer, all 100 “Chuck Russell” winners were invited back to Woodloch for a complimentary weekend. Ninety of them attended. The Spirit at Woodloch was unbelievable. The reason that this story sticks out in my mind is that when I am touring guests at Woodloch for the first time, I show them the wall with all the names. My thought is “is there any other hotel in the world that would honor one of its guests in such an incredible way!”

About Woodloch Resort

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_irvBn_VF4BM/SwW5PUG3MRI/AAAAAAAAAB8/yjfonVqGb8s/s320/snowmobile+SM+5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405930600474816786" />Named “TOP 10 WINTER RESORTS” by Parents Magazine - Woodloch, nestled in the picturesque northeast Pocono Mountains lake region, is the ideal destination for family vacations, reunions, weddings and corporate retreats!
